Asian Women United (AWU) of California was founded in 1976 by a group of San Francisco Bay Area Asian American women and received its non-profit organization status in 1981. Theorganization seeks to explore the many facets of Asian American women's experiences and varied cultural heritages through publications and video productions that provide positive role models for girls and young women.

AWU video programs are frequently broadcast on the Public Broadcast Stations (PBS). They are viewed by thousands each year at film festivals, campus screenings, and Asian American Heritage Month events. AWU publications are available in libraries and bookstores nationwide. Both the videos and books are also distributed in Canada and Taiwan.

Besides educating and informing the general public, AWU materials are used in colleges and universities to encourage discussions on diversity, career choices, sexual and cultural stereotypes, generation gaps, youth concerns, and gender issues.

Diverse Asian ethnicities are represented in AWU. Members are also represented in various occupations, including education, journalism, law, social work, art, public relations, and community activism.
